Library Technician

Assist Teacher Librarians to administer libraries and perform related library services in a school setting. Tasks may include teaching-related activities such as co-teaching, teaching STEM-related topics, teaching others on the use of technology, and providing school instructional support. Library-specific tasks may include helping readers in the use of library catalogs, databases, and indexes to locate books and other materials; answering questions that require only brief consultation of standard reference; compiling records; sorting and shelving books or other media; removing or repairing damaged books or other media; registering students; checking materials in and out; and replacing materials in shelves or files.

A typical day

  1. Reserve, circulate, renew, and discharge books and other materials.
  2. Process print and non-print library materials to prepare them for inclusion in library collections.
  3. Catalogue and sort books and other print and non-print materials according to procedure and return them to shelves, files, or other designated storage areas.
  4. Enter and update patrons' records on computers.
  5. Provide assistance to teachers and students by locating materials and helping to complete special projects.
  6. Take actions to halt disruption of library activities by problem patrons.
