There are often additional credentials required for this job. For instance, for guaranteed transfer classes in the liberal arts and sciences, it is common practice for an instructor to have a Master’s degree in the subject area, or a Master’s degree with successful completion of at least 18 graduate-level credits in the subject area, regardless of whether the credits were part of the Master’s degree. Also, for the majority of classes in Career and Technical Education (CTE), an instructor must be eligible to obtain a postsecondary credential in the specific CTE area. Please see page 11 of Concurrent Enrollment Policy and Example Practices for more detail.

A concurrent enrollment teacher must be employed as a High School Teacher. For some courses, industry work experience may be expected as well. Teachers seeking approval to teach these courses must meet the same hiring requirements as other faculty at the college/university.

Concurrent enrollment teachers work for a school district, but they are also approved by a postsecondary institution to teach college-level courses for that institution.

  1. Instruct students individually and in groups, using teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
  2. Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students.
  3. Guide and counsel students with adjustment or academic problems or with special academic interests.
  4. Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
  5. Read books to entire classes or small groups.
  6. Observe and evaluate students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
